Threads Launches New Trend Discovery Feature to Enhance Conversation Experience
Meta has introduced two major updates to its text-based platform, Threads, which was launched in 2023. These updates aim to improve user experience and transform the app into a more interactive and complete space.

The first update is the long-awaited addition of Direct Messages (DMs) — a feature users have been requesting since Threads' launch. The second update introduces a new feature called “Threads Highlighter”, designed to spotlight trending posts and discussions in a more organized and refined way than traditional hashtags.

Until recently, Threads did not support private communication, pushing users to switch to Instagram or WhatsApp for one-on-one chats. With the new update, users can now send direct messages from within Threads itself. However, there are privacy safeguards in place: the feature is only available to users over 18, and both users must follow each other on either Threads or Instagram to send messages — a move to reduce spam and unsolicited messages.

The DM interface closely resembles Instagram's, featuring an envelope icon at the bottom of the screen that opens the inbox. Currently, it supports only one-on-one chats, but Meta has promised upcoming features such as group chats, message filters, and controls to manage who can message you.

As for the "Highlighter" feature, it appears in the app’s content discovery sections, showcasing posts and topics that are gaining attention — especially those offering unique insights or sparking thoughtful discussions. Meta says the goal is to highlight genuine engagement rather than simply what's trending, and to move beyond reliance on hashtags.

While Threads initially resembled Instagram in design and content, Meta says the platform is evolving its own identity. Notably, over one-third of daily active users follow different accounts on Threads compared to Instagram, suggesting users are beginning to separate their content consumption habits between the two platforms.

With these updates, Threads is gradually becoming a fully-fledged social space, offering not just public posting but also private conversations and real-time content discovery — positioning itself more clearly as a complete social network for conversation and exploration.
