This new auto-disable feature builds on an existing Android function that makes it easier for Chrome users to unsubscribe from unwanted website notifications with a single tap. It does not affect notifications from installed web apps. Instead, permissions will only be revoked for sites that send frequent notifications which users rarely engage with.

According to Google, fewer than 1% of all web notifications in Chrome currently receive any user interaction, making them more distracting than helpful.

In its announcement, Google stated: “We’ve already tested this feature, and our results show a significant reduction in notification load, with only a slight change in the overall number of notification clicks. Our experiments also indicate that websites sending fewer notifications actually see an increase in click rates.”

Chrome users will be able to completely turn off the auto-disable feature or keep notifications for specific sites by visiting the site to re-enable them or by restoring permissions through the “Safety Check” feature.
