In response, Google has released a new update for the Google Photos app, introducing a smart tool that helps users free up phone storage with a single click by removing unnecessary files.
Organizing Photos
The highlight of the update is “photo stacking,” which groups similar photos taken around the same time—such as multiple shots of the same scene or person—into a single collection. The tool also suggests the best photo in each group and allows users to delete the rest with just one tap.
Removing Duplicates
Using artificial intelligence, the tool evaluates photo clarity and focus to pick the best shot, saving users from manually sorting through dozens of images while keeping their library clean and duplicate-free.
Recovering Storage Space
Deleting duplicate or unnecessary photos can free up significant space on your phone or local storage, reducing the need for paid Google One plans. The photo stacking feature is now available to all Google Photos users, not just Pixel owners, reflecting Google’s push to make AI-powered tools accessible and easy to use.
Gradual Rollout
The update will first reach Android users, followed by iOS. To enable the feature, go to App Settings → Preferences → Group similar photos.
This new feature makes photo management simpler and more efficient, especially for users who take many similar shots. By grouping photos and removing extras with a single click, it’s easy to reclaim storage space without losing important memories, making this update a major step in organizing digital clutter on smartphones.
