WhatsApp Introduces a New Privacy Feature

Previously, users who enabled end-to-end encryption for backups had to set a password or store a 64-digit encryption key to protect their data — a process that often caused confusion. Now, WhatsApp leverages the phone’s built-in security systems (such as fingerprint, Face ID, or screen lock) to encrypt and decrypt backups seamlessly and securely.

Once this option is enabled, WhatsApp automatically links your backup to your device’s security data, making your screen lock or biometric authentication the key to protecting your information.

When switching to a new phone or reinstalling the app, you no longer need to remember old passwords — simply unlock your phone as usual, and your chats, photos, and voice notes will be restored in seconds.

Despite this simplification, backups remain fully end-to-end encrypted, ensuring that neither WhatsApp nor cloud storage providers like Google Drive or iCloud can access the contents of your messages.

This new update offers the perfect balance between security and convenience, providing advanced protection without adding extra effort for users. WhatsApp is expected to roll out the feature gradually worldwide in the coming weeks, available under Settings → Chats → Encrypted Backup.
